Knitting for a Cause

This spring we are going to start a charity knitting group which will meet one Monday night a month from 6-8pm. Even though we aren't usually open on Mondays, we have decided to open up just for the evening so that this group can meet. We will provide free patterns and donated yarn to make knitted or crocheted blankets, prayer shawls, scarves and baby items to donate to local and national charities including Newborns in Need, Project Linus, Warm Up America, the Red Scarf Project, Cubs for Kids, Chemocaps and Warming Families. If you have a charity that you think we should add to our list, please let us know! For more information and links to online patterns, click here.

Our first meeting will be Monday, April 23rd from 6-8pm. See you there!!!

Debbie Bliss!

Our long awaited shipment of Debbie Bliss yarn and patterns has arrived! We have enough of each color now for whatever project you might have in mind. Not only did we get in more of our favorite Baby Cashmerino, Cashmerino Aran and Cashmerino DK but we got in a new DB yarn-- Cathay. Cathay is a silk-cotton blend perfect for spring and summer projects. It comes in a wide selection of beautiful colors and you can expect the same quality as all the other DB yarns. Along with these yarns we received several different DB pattern booklets, including some new ones. Our shelves are full now!

We have cotton in any color you can imagine after recieving a shipment of King Tut egyptian cotton. This high quality 100% cotton knits up to 4.5stitches per inch.

(Maggie was exhausted after admiring all the new yarn!)

New Yarn and Patterns

We just got in a box of cotton/wool/nylon Sockotta yarn for spring socks! Sockotta, by Plymouth, is a new yarn for us but those of you who are sock knitters are sure to be familiar with it. We got in two light, springy color ways that, when knit up, form fair-isle patterns (colors 6669 and 6673). One ball is enough for a pair of socks. (thanks so much to Elizabeth at trailingyarn.com for letting us use her picture!)

We also got in the the Cleckheaton pattern book for Studio Mohair (#942).

If you are looking for a new knitted bag look no further, we just received several patterns from Black Sheep Bags. We have all of the patterns listed on their website-- for now! This collection includes an entrelac pattern perfect for all of our customers who have recently learned this fascinating technique. My favorite is the Elizabeth bag-- which is yours?

Schulana Merino Cotton Blend

Schulana Merino Cotton Blend yarn by Skacel is a great choice for spring and summer projects. It is a smooth, round yarn perfect for socks, tops or many other projects. The next time you are in the shop ask us to show you the sock that Juli knitted to show off this yarn.

Donations for Newborns in Need

Newborns in Need is a wonderful organization that supports newborn babies, especially those born premature, low-birth weight or into needy families. They especially love to have little hand knitted sweaters and hats donated since it is so hard to find clothing that fits tiny preemie babies. Ask us about patterns and yarn for preemature baby clothes. If you have any items to donate just drop them off at the shop and we will collect them and take them to the local chapter.

Oe of our customers- Pat- brought in a huge bag full of beautifully knit baby hats, socks, sweaters and a blanket. Her sister-in-law knit all these sweet items to donate to needy babies. Thank you SO much! They are beautiful!

We have just finished making up our April class schedule. Check it out here or take a look at our online calendar.

Sweet Georgia Handpainted yarn has arrived...

I have been boasting about it for a long time - the Sweet Georgia handpainted sock yarn and lace is finally here!

We are lucky that we placed the order when we did because Felicia, the owner of Sweet Georgia Yarns is taking a well-deserved and very long vacation. This is it as far as Sweet Georgia yarn is concerned for a while. Come and get it while you can:)

Think Green!

I'm still thinking green! Our St. Patrick's Day sale is Saturday, March 17th. My first wedding appearance in quite a while is on that same day. My birthday pops up on March 19th and suddenly I get a great recycle idea!

First, check out our anything green sale, 20% off on March 17th! We might help you out if your basket is missing something green but we won't guarantee not to pinch.

Next, my husband and I are in his baby sister's wedding. I am 40-something and the other 6 bridesmaids are 20-something. I am biologically old enough to be their mother but I'm sure none of them see me as a motherly figure. Picture this....champagne colored strapless dresses, elegant high heels, taught flat tummies. Sounds like a perfect group of ladies to me so why do I keep picturing Lucille Ball going down the aisle tripping on her champagne dress, quickly grasping the neckline to keep it where it should be, and balancing on those tiny, kitten heels? While you are having fun at our St.Patrick's Day sale, think of me and keep your fingers crossed. I'm hoping The Luck of The Irish will be with me!

Now, for my "green" idea which originated by one terrific customer: recycle our Knit Picky bags. Many of you tell me you love our bags and I do, too! They make great project bags, they are good for packing a lunch, and they make fun cat toys. But they are plastic and we are aware of the need to be mindful of our environment. So, here's the deal....Keep a Knit Picky bag in your car. Bring in a recycled bag to use for your purchase and received 1% off your purchase. Whoo Hoo! You'll save a little change but more importantly, you'll be keeping "things green" and your closet won't look like a satellite branch of Knit Picky. Now if you are a collector, like myself, you are always welcome to another bag (or two)!!

Happy knitting during this month of GREEN!

Fair Isle Mitts Class

Our first fair isle mitts class began last night, taught by Laura. Our five students did a wonderful job tackling a difficult new technique. Everyone picked out beautiful colors of the Blue Sky Alpaca/Silk and I can't wait to see how they turn out! To see pictures from our class click here. Students-- do you have pictures of your work in progress? Email them to Laura at lbullins@bellsouth.net and she will put them in our online picture album. Or, bring your mitts into the shop and we will take a picture.

Summer Fiber Camp!

Do you have kids between the ages of 8 and 14? Or do you know someone who does? If so, what could be better than a week of knitting, felting, crocheting and dyeing just for them this summer! Click here to see our flier.

Blog Instructions

We are so excited about our new blog but we realize that not everyone is familiar with using blogs. A blog (short for "web log") is a website where the authors can post messages (called "posts"). Then, readers (thats you!) can leave "comments." To do this, click the word "comments" under the post you want to respond to. This will take you to a page that has a box for you to type in. Simply type your comment in the box and click the circle next to "Other" below the text box. You can leave your real name (just your first name and last initial if you want!) or a pretend name. If you don't have a website, leave that box blank. Finally click on the "Publish" button and you are done! Other people will be able to read your comment and even respond if they want. If you ever decide that you want to get rid of a comment you posted just let us know and we can delete it for you! If you have any other questions stop by the shop and ask or email our website expert, Laura, at lbullins@bellsouth.net

So give it a try, click on "comment" right below and just leave us a message to say hi!

We would also like to invite you to send us your web addresses if you have a blog or website and we will put a link on our blog. Or, if you have projects you made out of Knit Picky yarn and would like to share pictures email us your digital pictures or bring your project by the shop and we will take a picture. We would like to make an online photo album with lots of pictures of customers' projects.
