Anyway, here is the yarn made from Shanna's namesake (hand-dyed roving by Funky Carolina).

Hummmmm, now what pattern shall I knit? Suggestions? About 400yds of sock wgt.

Lots of love, Jo

I'm on Third Base!

I've added my third color, it's Blue Raspberry by Shalimar. Still having fun! How is everyone doing? First, second or third base??

Announcing Summer Hours!

Starting Tuesday June 12, 2012 we will begin the change to our new Summer schedule. So, without further ado, here's the new hours!

Tuesday: Noon - 4pm
Wednesday: Noon - 8pm
Thursday: 10am - 4pm
Friday: Noon - 4pm
Saturday: Noon - 4pm.

As you can see, our closing hours did not change and the only thing that did change is our opening hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. We're doing this in part to help give more opportunities to help our customers when they need it.

Normally when only one of our staff members are in the store, we wouldn't be able to give a one-on-one session to customers with knitting questions or problems. With our new hours, you can still schedule a time for a session between 10am and noon and not have to wait for two staff members to be in the store. You can of course still schedule a time for help during our normal hours of operation.

This weekend's Color Affection KAL kick-off was a huge success and we can't wait to see all the colorful and creative shawls everyone comes up with!

Knitting On The Beach Trunk Show!

This Saturday June 9th, from noon until 4pm, Laura Koontz the designer for Knitting on the Beach will be in the shop to kick off her two week trunk show! You might recognize some of Laura's elegant and simple designs, such as;

All Season's Vest

String of Pearls Cowl

and the Cotton 3 Cable Shawl

Laura will be available in store to answer your questions, offer yarn suggestions and to chat with! We at Knit Picky are honored that Laura chose us to help with her very fist Trunk Show, and we hope you're just as excited as we are. We have all of her patterns available for purchase and every pattern has at least one display, most of them cotton! Laura is also kind enough to donate two items for a raffle!

All purchases of a Knitting on the Beach pattern AND yarn during the first week of her Trunk Show will be entered into drawing held at the end of the day Saturday, June 16. The winner will receive the first item that Laura was kind enough to donate. Then, we do it all over again! Since many of Laura's patterns make for lovely quick knits, you can have the opportunity to make two items during the two week time frame! All purchases of a KotB pattern and yarn made during the second week of the Trunk Show, June 18-23, will be entered into a SECOND drawing for another garment.

Now, we could show spoilers of the items up for raffle, but where would the fun in that be? Stop by the shop starting Saturday, June 9 at 12pm and come see what beautiful items they are for yourself!

Interested in seeing more of Laura and her designs at Knitting on the Beach? Drop by her Ravelry page or head over to her website at http://www.knittingonthebeach.com/

You will also learn how to set in sleeves and how to seam properly; the basics of sweater making! This garment has just the right combination of design elements to be a perfect accessory for both spring and summer outfits. Charlotte has two repeats of Vine Lace around the bottom and then stockinette the rest of the way up, making this garment feminine but not fussy. Free Pattern Friday: Boneyard Shawl

Happy June 1st everyone! This post is going to be the first in a long line of posts that will be going out every Friday! We're calling it, Free Pattern Friday! What does that mean for you? Every Friday, we'll be posting a wonderful free pattern for you to get inspired by! Patterns will range from knit, crochet, simple and complex. We're trying to keep everyone involved in the fun.

Stephen West with his Boneyard Shawl

This week's pattern is called Boneyard. It's a shawl designed by Stephen West of the one and only Westknits, and is just as simple as it is elegant. The pattern is your standard stockinette stitch shawl, with ridges every 12th row which provides the shawl with a clean and interesting look.

The beautiful thing about this pattern is that it can be made in any weight yarn you can think of, all you need to do is adjust the needle size, and viola! Want to use that lovely skein of Cascade 220 you just bought at Knit Picky? Go for it! Is a skein of Malabrigo Sock calling your name, but you have no idea what to make with it? Here's the perfect project! The shawl's simple look plays perfectly with solid, tonal and verigated yarns!People have even knit the shawl in one color, and used a contrasting color for the ridges! How cool is that?

If you want a nice, airy feel, go up a needle size or two. If you want it to be tight and warm, go with a needle size down! You can't go wrong with this pattern! It's great for not only beginning knitters who want to explore shawl making, but also for the experienced knitter looking for a great, relaxing knit!

If you can't seem to think of any yarn you'd like to use for this, here are some suggestions! These are yarns used by other knitters and each provide a great look.

A Picture of Mike's very own Boneyard. Made from Cascade 220 Heathers

Cascade 220: This yarn is great for almost any project, and it's no different for Boneyard! You can choose between solid, heathers, superwash, sport weight, superwash sport and many more! You can create any look you dream of with this yarn!

Madelinetosh Tosh DK: Working up at a versatile dk to light worsted gauge Tosh DK is perfect for accessory projects like shawls. Each squishy soft skein is hand-dyed in small dye lots and machine washable.

Galler Yarns Peruvian Tweed: This lofty and luxurious 100% alpaca yarn is beautiful to work with. Mike is making a store sample of this shawl in this yarn and should be in the store sometime soon! Keep an eye out!

Berroco Ultra Alpaca: Made with 50% Wool and 50% Alpaca, this yarn is sure to please!

Malabrigo Rios: Another great yarn! This superwash yarn is dyed is rich, vibrant colors with are sure to please!

Malabrigo Sock: This yarn is a bit hit in the shop, and is superwash as well! Don't let the name of the yarn fool you, Malabrigo Sock is great for shawls too! The colors are just as vibrant as the Malabrigo Rios and you won't be disappointed if you choose this for your Boneyard shawl.

A close up of the shawl's boarder

If you'd like to make this your very next project, you can download the pattern for free on Ravlery (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/boneyard-shawl) or on Stephen West's website (http://westknits.com/index.php/pattern/shawls/boneyard-shawl/). And as always, you can always stop by the shop and one of the staff members can print it out for you as you pick out a great yarn!
